Profile
The roles microorganisms play in nature are increasingly being harnessed through optimizing their vast metabolic and physiological capabilities to man’s advantage. Microbes have been known to play principal roles in biogeochemical cycling of elements and the activities of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria on plant growth and development are well documented. Dr. Orji’s research is centered on investigating the impact environmental pollutants have on microorganisms and how microbial activities could be optimized to facilitate the clean-up of environmental pollution. She is also interested in investigating the possibility of developing microbial cultures or consortia for use as agricultural inoculants to improve crop yield.

Microorganisms are undoubtedly a unique and astonishing gift of nature to Man. Though microbes could be double faced in their functions, it is an established fact that they could be explored to better Human existence. The use of these organisms and their metabolites in Biosynthesis, Biotransformation, Biodegradation and Enhanced Oil Recovery are few of such positive exploration of Microbes.
Interestingly, these Organisms could be manipulated at the gene level and through process optimization for better results. Mr. Anyanwu’s research interests are centered at exploring and manipulating Microorganisms for real time Industrial, Environmental, Pharmaceutical and Medical advances that will result into a scientific patent, advancement and revolution.
Finally, newer systems, aspects, fields and research approaches in reference Nanotechnology, Quorum sensing, Micromanipulation and Bioinformatics have gained popularity. A loop into these will have outstanding and endless possibilities.

Microbiologists have been faced with many exciting and important challenges such as finding new ways to identify and combat diseases, use microorganisms in biogas production as well as reduce pollution. Miss Akaluka has keen interest in employing microorganisms in bioremediation to reduce pollution and in biotransformation of waste into beneficial materials for agriculture. She is also interested in the use of natural sources as alternatives to synthesized antibiotics in the treatment of diseases.

Profile
The Bursa of Fabricus which is an important tissue in the study of Gumboro disease in birds. This disease is highly contagious and affects young chickens, characterized by the destruction of the Lymphoid organs and particularly the Bursa of Fabricus, where ß-lymphocytes mature and differentiate, and causing immunnosuppression in birds. My special interests are in the control of Infectious Bursal Disease, immunnosuppression, immunological effects on the birds and in food microbiology.

A large part of my current research is directed towards examining the microbial biodegradation of hydrocarbon compounds present in crude oil, the production and use of microbial surfactants in remediation of crude oil polluted soil. I have also research interests in the monitoring of the quality of water samples from rivers and municipal supplies to determine factors affecting portability and quality, and the spread of resistance among clinical bacterial isolates in the hospital environment.

Dr. Wesley Braide has been researching into alternative source(s) of food rich in proteins , amino acids and other useful minerals and vitamins to solve the problem of food scarcity , safety and malnutrition especially in Africa and other underdeveloped countries. Enormous research in the nutritional qualities and microbiological characteristics of an edible larva of lepidopteran, Bunaea alcinoe has yielded fruitful results.
The study explored the microbiological characteristics and nutritional quality of the ubiquitous larva of the emperor moth, B. alcinoe. The work showed that the larva of the edible lepidopteran contains all the essential amino acids and a very high level of protein (53.2%) as well as many genera of potentially pathogenic bacteria and moulds in the raw and traditionally processed forms, and therefore requires care in handling in order to minimize danger to the consumers. In particular, the presence of certain bacteria and fungi on the raw and processed larva has public health implications because of toxins associated with these organisms. The study also revealed that the microbial flora of the larva originated from the leaf microflora which serves as food for the larva. If carefully processed, the larvae holds potential as a highly nutritious and sustainable food source for man, particularly in mitigating the prevalent problems of protein energy malnutrition. These findings constitute an important contrition to knowledge.

Profile
Microorganisms are ubiquitous and as old as time itself. As well as being detrimental to human health and sometimes the environment particularly in the area of industrial and food spoilage, they can be harnessed for our benefit and can even serve as food.
To enable and equip themselves to survive in the sometimes harsh environments they find themselves, as well as escape destruction by man, they produce certain substances and chemicals including antibiotics and siderophores. They also produce substances that make them antagonistic to other microbes. These are called bacteriocins.
Incidentally, man in his desire to harness the benefits of these substances, being antimicrobial in nature, have inadvertently abused usage leading to resistance by the same microbes they are meant to destroy. This has led to failures in medical therapy as well emerging and reemerging resistant organisms. One way to beat this trend is by adequate knowledge of mechanisms of resistance and incidence in environments that we may consider remote from health care settings.
Dr. Chikwendu’s interest is the study of these mechanisms by which bacteria express resistance to these antibiotics to escape destruction, possibility of transfer of genetic information between distant species, conditions that could affect bacterial survival in the environment they find themselves, reservoirs of resistance genes.
Knowledge of these will further equip us as we continue this age long battle with bacterial species and may be able to finally contain their destructive tendencies.

Profile
The discovery of antibiotics many years ago marked a major mile stone in the history of microbial disease treatment and control. However, the emergence and re-emergence of antibiotic resistant strains of most pathogenic organisms, particularly in recent times, has posed a big challenge to the management of infectious diseases. Dr. Amadi and co-workers had over the years determined the prevalence rate of some pathogens in Eastern Nigeria and their susceptibility to commonly used antibiotics. The occurrence of Extended spectrum Beta lactamase (ESBL) enzymes among the resistant pathogens as well as their molecular characterization has been ascertained in some cases and still on going. Further, the effect of crude medicinal plant extracts on some isolated resistant pathogens has been conducted. Further determination and characterization of these extracts are still on course.
Newcastle Disease (ND) remains a paramount problem to poultry industry in Nigeria. In this regard, the occurrence rate of Newcastle disease virus has been determined in some areas of Eastern Nigeria as well as the effects of local adjuvant. Further efforts in the area of vaccine delivery techniques and identification of lentogenic/avirulent strains of the virus are our current interest.
In Nigeria, public health parasitic diseases have remained a big threat to the populace over the years. Efforts to determine their actual spread and distribution are vital to their prevention and control. Dr. Amadi and colleagues has previously determined the prevalence and prevention strategies of some common public health diseases such as malaria. The current research interest is on hand hygiene practices among different categories of people and indigenization of hand hygiene in public and private places.

The synthetic chemical compounds and its use has permeated every aspects of modern life. A particular widespread group of these chemical is phenol and its derivatives. Phenol enters the environment through wastewater discharges from a variety of industries.
Phenol is very toxic to all forms of life even to those aerobic mesophilic microorganisms that utilize it as a sole source of carbon and energy.
Measurement of microbial dehydrogenase activity is used in the assessment of ecotoxicological impact of environmental substrates as the enzymes are intracellular.
Tetrazolium salts are reduced by viable cells and not by dead cells. This property has been used in agriculture to assess seed viability and since then many other applications were reported including the use of triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) in microbiology.

Biodegradation, the chemical dissolution of materials by bacteria or other biological means. Microbial biodegradation of pollutants has intensified in recent years as humanity strives to find sustainable ways to clean up contaminated environments. Dr S. I. Okorondu and Dr C. O. Akujobi have worked on the Effects of Animal Wastes Treatments of Diesel Polluted Soils on Hydrocarbon-Utilizing Microbial Counts and Oil Degradation among others.
Fermentation of food is the process of converting carbohydrate sugar to alcohol and carbon dioxide or organic acids using yeasts, bacteria or a combination. Useful products such as ethanol and other alcohols are produced from fermentation of less expensive and readily available food materials. Dr S. I. Okorondu has worked on Ethanol Production from Cassava
Medicinal plants are various plants used in herbalism that have medicinal values. More than 50% of the world’s population relies mainly on plants and plants extracts for health care. There is need for us to identify medicinal plants around us and make use of them in our health care as they do not have side effects as do chemically produced drugs. Dr S. I. Okorondu has done a lot of work on medicinal plants and their antimicrobial properties.
Culture media are used to grow microorganisms in the laboratory. Efforts are been made to formulate culture media that could achieve desired result as the conventional media and at the same time less expensive. Recently, Dr S. I. Okorondu has worked on Gari extract agar as a culture media for mycological studies.

Am honored to recount my experience for the past few years In FUTO. Since my arrival, i have had ample opportunities to meet and interact not only with staff but also students from different backgrounds. My interest in Microbiology sparked off through watching documentaries. I was fascinated with microbes, their existence, and ability to cause so much harm to their host but above all the possibility of harnessing them for use in medicine, agriculture and industry.
Microbiology is a vast subject that many researchers have delved into yet there is still a lot to be learnt about. I have been involved in carrying out the practical (Laboratory) aspect of Microbiology. Demonstrating how microbes impact on human health, establish and multiply in the host body and evolve into diseases -pathogenesis.

Complete cure for HIV/AIDS has been diligently pursued by scientists around the world, but there has been no report of absolute success with the highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) still remaining as the only current treatment modality for the disease. This treatment guideline, though very effective in suppressing replication of the virus and reducing mortality of patients, does not offer an ultimate cure to the disease. This realization, coupled with other side effects associated with the drug, and the recent trail failure of HIV vaccines and microbiocides, have urgently called for the need to develop inexpensive alternative anti-HIV/AIDS therapies.
Consequently, the search for selective antiviral agents, principally focused on anti-HIV agents, has been vigorous in recent years with African herbal medicine being in the forefront of this new research against the scourge. Despite a paucity of evidence on effectiveness, and the possibility of harm however, the Ministries of Health of several African nations currently promote traditional medicines for the treatment of HIV and associated symptoms. Worldwide there is also a growing trend towards herbal medicines as supplements and/or treatments for HIV/AIDS.
In view of the current efforts aimed at evaluating the possible benefits of harnessing the components of natural products, especially plant materials, in the unrelenting and vigorous search for a possible breakthrough at finding a permanent cure for HIV/AIDS, this study was designed to explore the anti HIV potential of some of the rich variety of herbs and spices Nigeria is endowed with.

Profile
Dr Nweke has been involved in teaching and research in the area of Analytical Microbiology with special reference to ecotoxicology. He has been working on the interactions of microorganisms with metals and organic compounds. Due to the complex nature of environmental pollution, Dr Nweke and his research team are redirecting their efforts to evaluating toxicity of chemical mixtures to environmental microbial populations using a number of biological responses. Mathematical models are employed to predict chemical toxicity both as single chemical and mixtures.

In recent years, bacterial resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics has risen dramatically. Contributing to this increase has been the spread of extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs), enzymes that hydrolyze the expanded-spectrum cephalosporins, like ceftazidime and cefotaxime, and/or the monobactam and aztreonam. Dr Akujobi’s research is geared towards isolation of bacterial species with the inherent capability to produce these enzymes and elucidation of the different classes of these. Efforts are made to use phytochemicals isolated from local plants to combat the antibiotic resistance in these organisms.
In recent time in Nigeria there has an increase in the menace of environmental pollution caused by oil exploration and transportation. This has caused tremendous hardship on the host communities of exploration oil companies and has led to constant friction between the members of these communities and the oil companies. There is a need to find an environmental friendly approach to remedy this situation. Dr Akujobi’s work has been able to discover that the oil polluted soil can be remediated within a very short time by the use of pollutant-adapted microorganisms with the help of different types of organic nutrient supplements.
Due to constant soil nutrient depletion, desert encroachment and indiscriminate environmental pollution in Nigeria, plants especially crop plants are always under environmental stresses which affect their yields. We are trying to identify some plant growth promoting rhizobacteria that would be able to ameliorate these stresses and improve plant yield.

Profile
The discharge of heavy metals in terrestrial eco-system has been of major environmental concern. These chemicals have adverse effect on microbial biomass and its activity, which play an important role in biological cycles of almost all the major plant nutrient cycling, soil nutrient cycling and in maintaining soil fertility.
To monitor such negative effect on the ecology, microorganisms and enzymes are used. They are sensitive to heavy metal pollution and are known to be vital for the efficient functioning of any ecosystem, thus factors that affect their metabolism, distribution and abundance are of great concern. They are therefore used as early warning indicators of ecosystem stress.
Monitoring microbial enzyme activities such as dehydrogenases, phosphatases, glucosidases and FDA has been known to be highly sensitive to metals and its assay a representation of the metabolic capacity of soil thus indicating soil microbial activities.
The effect of heavy metal on soil has been found to be affected by the heavy metal, concentration of metal, time of exposure and soil type.

I am delighted to give an account of my barely three-year experience as an Assistant lecturer. Since I joined the department, I have had the opportunity to interact with students, lecturers and other members of the University Community.
In a developing country as Nigeria that I find myself, I wish to make a positive impact for the general well being of our population .Employing the characteristic attributes of microorganisms such as rapid multiplication has gone a long way in helping us better the society in which we live in. Metabolic products of microorganisms have been of use in the industry. Also microbiological methods of analysis and assessment have proven relevance in the control of major food borne illnesses. I am interested in the research on the metabolic processes and products of microorganisms that are beneficial to man, as well as the control of diseases of public health importance.
I teach undergraduate students in the different aspects of microbiology.I am presently developing a proposal for my PHD work on the microbial production of bioethanol from cellulosic biomass and welcome collaborations from other scholars in this line of research.
I will conclude that my stay has been a challenging, worthwhile and happy experience for me and my students.

Livestock production is perceived by the public to be potential food for the world’s needy people and also livestock are essential to developing sustainable agricultural systems in Third world countries. Sustainable animal production means that we are able to produce food animal and animal products without lasting damage to the environment which means essential elements like water, air and soil are left without dead loads and those by-products of animal production create no animal and human health risks through environmental protection and animal waste management. Animal agriculture is central to the economic vitality of many of our rural communities, but offsetting these social benefits of animal agriculture are the economic costs and potential public and environmental health risks associated with the storage and disposal of animal faeces (excrement and urine). In the rearing of domestic livestock on range or pasture, animal faeces may not be concentrated in one area as with confined livestock. These animals can also contaminate water by defecating in unprotected surface water, through surface runoff and as a result of seepage of water through soil that contains an excessive amount of animal faeces. The potential for this environmental pollution is present and growing because of the concentration of production into fewer large-scale units, not the increase in total numbers of animals.
Large-scale production facilities have the potential to cause serious environmental contamination as a result of the amount of faeces produced at one site. Good management of animal wastes and a commitment to cost-effective environmental stewardship can go a long way towards reducing the potential public and environmental health risks associated with the storage and disposal of animal wastes. The trend in animal production has shown a dramatic shift in the last 50 – 60 years from small family farms and grazing operations toward large commercial confinement operations. The concentration of animals into confinement facilities poses many environmental challenges, among which pathogenic microorganisms of faecal orgin are of concern. Animal agriculture results in the production of copious amounts of manure much of which is ultimately used as fertilizer for crops or spread onto land. On a per weight basis, livestock animals produce between 13 and 25 times more manure than humans. Comparing the most recent U.S. census data and USDA livestock reports, it can be estimated that animals produce somewhere between 3 and 20 times more weight). Even moderate livestock operations can produce as much manure as a small sized city.
There are a range of health hazards relating to livestock droppings owing to the presence of a wide range of bacteria and other organisms propagating in the guts and related tissues as well as glands of these farms animals. In developing countries like Nigeria, household subsistence farming is common which means that a large proportion of the population has close contact with food animals. These animals are important reservoirs of antimicrobial resistant organisms and therefore if resistant organisms are common in animals the chance that they will be transmitted to humans is more likely). In the report by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) 2007, it was stated that the world’s leading medical, agricultural and veterinary authorities reached a consensus that antimicrobial drug overuse in animal agriculture is contributing to human public health problems. Microbial studies showed that antimicrobial drug-resistant bacteria from farm animals not only infect humans but may transfer that resistance to other bacteria that colonize the human gut. The dozing of livestock animals with copious amounts of antimicrobial agents for growth promotion and prophylaxis may promote antimicrobial resistance in pathogens, increasing the severity of disease and limiting treatment options for sickened individuals. Livestock management, manure collection and storage, land application of manure, farm environmental management personal hygiene in the farms and recommendations on antimicrobial use. To enhance the hygienic level of livestock production in Nigeria or any other country the farmers and relevant stakeholders must be informed and sensitized on Good Management Practices to reduce farm pathogen levels thereby reducing the potential hazards and risks involved in transferring zoonotic pathogens of public health concern to humans.

Across the globe, mankind is producing more refuse than ever before, creating unprecedented problems to the environment. People in developed countries throw away mountains of thrash, likewise those in the third world countries. These mountains of thrash, with the offensive odour emanating from them constitute the major source of environmental pollution. Interestingly, it has been discovered that huge sum of revenue is lying beneath these mountains of thrash and these thrash can be converted to treasure.
The demand for food, fuel and energy resources continues to increase worldwide currently, there are many international efforts aimed at finding renewable sustainable, and environmental - friendly solutions to these problems. In addition, climate change is a growing concern around the world and stakeholders are aggressively seeking energy sources and technologies that can mitigate the impact of global warming. Renewable energies (naturally replenished) have been identified as a prime source of ‘clean’ energy, as they emit few or no net GHGs (Green House Gases) into the atmosphere. As a result, it is necessary for both developed and developing countries to work hand-in-hand to find alternative energy sources and to spread their use.
It is against this background that I initiated a research work on Anaerobic Digestion of Lignocellulosic Organic Wastes (Corn stover and Rice Straw) for Biogas Production.

Drug resistance or inability of pathogenic microorganuisms to be susceptible to conventional antibiotics has led to persistence of many bacterial infections over the years. Consequently, cases of emerging and re-emerging of dreadful bacterial diseases have been recorded. The antimicrobials may be antibiotics or non-pharmaceutical antimicrobials consisting of chemical or natural compounds.
Tradition healers have for long, used plants to prevent or cure diseases.
Scientific investigations of these plants have revealed that they possess anti-microbial qualities by inhibiting the growth of microorganisms. Sensitivity results conducted by various researchers, using plant extracts, have revealed strong zones of inhibition againsts pathogensincluding Escherichiacoli, Proteus sp., Staphylococcusaureus, Pseudomonasaeruginosa, and Klebsiellaaerogenes. Advantages of using the plant extracts lie in their easy availability and non-toxic nature that could be detrimental to the health of the consumer.
Eventually, it is envisaged that the highly sought-for alternative in anti-microbial treatment, which would be effective, safe and easily available at affordable prices, would emerge from plant investigations. The Asian countries led by China have taken the bold steps successfully. Nigeria cannot afford to be left out.

Prof. (Mrs) Rose Nkechinyere Nwabueze of the Department of Microbiology is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. She holds the record of being the first female in that position in the 31 years of the University’s existence.
Prof. (Mrs) Nwabueze obtained a B.Sc Honours degree in Microbiology from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1979 and a Ph.D also in Microbiology from the University of Newcastle, England in 1987. She is a member of several learned societies, which include the Nigerian Society for Microbiology, American Society for Microbiology and Biotechnology Society of Nigeria.
Prof. (Mrs) Nwabueze was a British Medical Research Council Scholar who worked as a Junior Research Associate at the University of Newcastle, England before joining the Federal University of Technology, Owerri in 1988. Her research interests are in the areas of Analysis of the Surface Chemistry of Bacteria, Control of Microbial Diseases and the use of Microbes and Plant-Microbial Systems in the Remediation of Polluted Environment She has published research articles in national and international journals.
